One of two breeds known as a Welsh Corgi, the Pembroke is a cattle herding dog that originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales, and is one of the world’s most popular herding dogs whose lineage can be traced back to 1107 AD.
Pembrokes are bright, sensitive dogs who respond well to training. Fearless and independent from their herding ancestry, they make vigilant watchdogs with acute senses. Pembrokes make excellent companions as small house dogs, as they are affectionate and companionable without being needy.
The Pembroke has a soft, light undercoat covered by a coarse outer coat. They shed daily, which requires ongoing grooming at home and periodically from a professional. During high shedding season, baths can help loosen their dead hairs, but the dog must be completely dry before brushing begins.
Pembrokes are typically healthy but can succumb to a bleeding disorder called von Willebrand’s disease that is common in their breed. They may also contract elbow and hip dysplasia, as well as cardiac issues, eye disorders, and degenerative myelopathy.
Because of their high activity levels, Corgis require a high-quality, high-protein diet, which will be different for each dog and dependent on age, individual metabolism, and level of activity.
