The Labrador Retriever, also affectionately known as “Labs” were originally used as fishing dogs in Newfoundland. They would retrieve nets and catch fish that got away. Since, they have become a favorite disability assistance breed, frequently trained to aid those with blindness or autism. They also often act as therapy dogs or perform screening and detection work for law enforcement and other official agencies.
Labs are kind, pleasant, and outgoing, and are best known for their obedience, loyalty, and playfulness, which make great family pets. They are also sporting and hunting dogs,
Labs should be brushed once a week to stay clean, as it stimulates the natural oils in the skin, which will keep their coats shiny. They are rather low maintenance and do not need to be bathed too often, as frequent baths may dry out their skin. Their eyes and ears must be cleaned regularly, and their nails clipped often.
Notable issues for Labs include inherited disorders and obesity making them prone to elbow or hip dysplasia, along with the risk of knee problems.
While most adult labs require feedings of 3 to 3-1/2 cups of food per day, each dog’s size, weight, and activity level is unique and may require an adjustment.
