Golden Retriever Breed Overview

Originally bred in Scotland in the mid-19th century, the Golden Retriever was born from the popularity of wildfowl hunting, and the necessity to retrieve the downed birds from both land and water across vast hunting grounds dotted with marshes and carved by rivers.

The Scottish took their best water spaniels and crossed them with the existing retrievers, resulting in the breed today known as the Golden Retriever.

In 1925, the American Kennel Club recognized the breed, and in 1938, the Golden Retriever Club of America was founded.

What is the Golden Retriever Temperament?

The Golden Retriever is described as a kind, friendly, and confident dog who makes a great family pet, as they are patient and caring towards children.

The typical Golden Retriever is calm and naturally intelligent, with an exceptional eagerness to please.

What are the Proper Golden Retriever Grooming Tips & Care?

Golden Retrievers are abundant shedders, which means their coat should be bathed, brushed, and groomed regularly, either at home or by a professional groomer. Golden Retrievers also need to have their ears cleaned regularly to avoid infection.

What are the Golden Retriever Health Conditions?

Golden Retrievers are susceptible to specific ailments, including hip dysplasia, which is common with the breed. Obesity is also common in the breed because of their love of food.
